FINDRISC (Finnish Diabetes Risk Score)
Why Use
Identifies individuals at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, guiding potential laboratory screenings (e.g., hemoglobin A1c) and enabling the implementation of preventive interventions. Recommended as a validated risk calculator by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care (CTFPHC).
When to Use
Used to assess a patient’s risk of type 2 diabetes during routine health maintenance visits.
Formula
Management
Suggested management based on the CTFPHC recommendations: Score Recommendation 0–14 points Routine screening for type 2 diabetes is not recommended. 15–20 points Hemoglobin A1c screening every 3–5 years. ≥21 points Hemoglobin A1c screening annually. For additional guidance on type 2 diabetes screening, please refer to the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care guidelines .
Advice
This tool can be used to identify modifiable risk factors (e.g., diet, physical activity), which can be targeted through patient education and lifestyle modifications.
