Oxygenation Index

Oxygenation Index (OI)
%
cmH₂O
mmHg
Predicts outcomes, especially in pediatric patients; helps determine need for ECMO.

When to Use

Used in pediatrics to define ALI and ARDS and assess for potential ECMO treatment.

Formula

Oxygenation index = (F i O 2 x P AW ) / P a O 2 where variables are as follows: F i O 2 = fraction of inhaled oxygen, % P AW = mean airway pressure, cm H 2 O PaO 2 = Partial pressure of arterial oxygen, mm Hg

Advice

OI <25: good outcome OI 25-40: >40% mortality OI >40: Consider ECMO
