Select all criteria
Predicts mortality risk in pancreatitis with fewer variables than Ranson’s.

When to Use

The BISAP is a more-recent score than the older Ranson’s Criteria, and does not require data points from 48 hours into a patient’s hospital admission.

Formula

Addition of the selected points.

Management

Patients with atypical features or worsening clinical status may benefit from CT imaging and/or surgical consultation to assess for signs of necrotic pancreatitis or need for surgical intervention.

Advice

Pain control and hydration are mainstays of pancreatitis management. Bowel rest was historically also used, but modern guidelines such as from the American College of Gastroenterology recommend early feeding in mild acute pancreatitis (Tenner 2013) .

More Information

Increasing BISAP scores also correlate with pancreatitis severity and risk of necrotic pancreatitis. The BISAP performed similarly to more extensive scores, like Ranson’s Criteria and APACHE-II.
