Besides age and sex, acute phase reactants can be influenced by various other factors, including anemia, pregnancy, kidney disease, and certain medications. These factors should be taken into account when interpreting results.
Advice
Always consider the clinical presentation and other diagnostic findings alongside ESR and CRP levels. Use in conjunction with other tests to differentiate between types of inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions. Elevated ESR and CRP are not diagnostic on their own and can be elevated in a variety of conditions, including infections, malignancies, and autoimmune diseases. If elevated, initiate or escalate investigations to identify the underlying cause, such as imaging studies or specific autoimmune panels. In chronic inflammatory conditions, results may be used to monitor disease activity and guide management, which can include modifying or initiating anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive therapies. Schedule regular follow-ups to monitor ESR and CRP trends, adjusting treatment plans as necessary.
