Why Use

This score is well studied in a variety of clinical settings. It has been translated in a variety of languages. It can be performed quickly and used to determine if further investigation is warranted.

When to Use

Use this tool to assess for potential cognitive impairment in geriatric patients. Can be used in the hospital or outpatient setting.

Pearls / Pitfalls

This is a screening tool only and should not be used to formally diagnose patients with dementia. If score is below 7, additional workup should be performed.

Advice

A score <7 suggests that cognitive impairment may be present. This is a screening tool only. A low score should be further investigated prior to formal diagnosis. Workup should include an investigation of potential underlying disease processes, along with additional cognitive testing once other causes are ruled out.
