Formula

The Glasgow Alcoholic Hepatitis Score is calculated by the addition of the selected points: Variable Points Age <50 1 ≥50 2 White blood cell count <15 x10 9 /L 1 ≥15 x10 9 /L 2 BUN <5 mmol/L 1 ≥5 mmol/L 2 Bilirubin <125 μmol/L 1 125-250 μmol/L 2 >250 μmol/L 3 PT ratio <1.5 1 1.5-2.0 2 >2.0 3

Pearls / Pitfalls

The Glasgow Alcoholic Hepatitis Scale (GAHS) is useful in determining which patients may require more intensive management based on their estimated mortality.

Management

Refer to ACG guidelines for management of idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury.

Advice

Patients with alcoholic hepatitis should be counseled on alcohol cessation, as continued drinking will eventually contribute to their death.
